Let’s Get Outside: Winter Activities Near You

Just because there is still frost on our windows does not mean we have to lay low. We feature one great winter activity in each of our Kelson Group locations in B.C. and Alberta!

B.C. is referred to as “Beautiful British Columbia” and rightfully so! From breathtaking views to vibrant city life, B.C. is home to diverse activities that will fit any lifestyle! Known widely for its oil and gas industry, Alberta is also home to important nature reserves and historic National Parks. Whether you call B.C. or Alberta your home, we have curated some fun and family-friendly activities to enjoy in these last few weeks of winter in every city Kelson Group owns and operates apartments!

ALBERTA

Edmonton: Winter Cycling

If you are an active person and still want to get out and explore the city in winter, head over to your nearest bike lane and beat the winter blues! Winter cycling has become increasingly popular in big cities and cycling in the colder seasons brings lots of great benefits: improves your mood and knocks off some stress, plus you can explore the hidden gems of the city.

Grande Prairie: Winter Picnicking

Pack a picnic and enjoy an outdoor feast and bonfire at one of the beautiful picnic areas at South Bear Creek Park! The park offers year-round washroom facilities, meeting spaces, an off-leash dog area and countless walking trails!

Leduc: Winter Sports

Looking for winter activity ideas to enjoy with the family? Grab a sled and go tobogganing at “Mt Leduc” with many great spots available to zip down a hill. Or if you have cross country skis, stay on the flatter, more groomed areas and go cross country skiing. With over 6 km of freshly groomed trails located at The Leduc Golf and Country Club, cross-country skiing in Leduc is easy to access. The trails are open daily and are free of charge to the public.

Sherwood Park: Winter Camping

You might think winter camping is an extreme activity, but it is quite doable as long as you are prepared! Enjoy this fun way to experience nature  by visiting the Strathcona Wilderness Centre just 30 minutes outside of Sherwood Park. There is access to year-round camp sites and bunkhouses for rent, plus disc golf, picnic sites, and fire pits.

Abbotsford: Visit the Clayburn Village Heritage Site

Are you in for a short road trip? Just a 20-minute drive from downtown Abbotsford, Clayburn Village offers visitors a unique view of an important part of Abbotsford’s past. You can tour the village, visit local coffee shops, and grab a souvenir on your way out. Be sure to stroll the Village and feel the history.

Kamloops: Ski and Snowboard at the Top of the World

Just a 45-minute drive north of Kamloops, Sun Peaks Resort is Canada’s second-largest ski area. Walk around the village and visit boutique shops, cafés and restaurants serving local craft beer! It does not matter if you are a skilled winter sports enthusiast or once-in-a-while visitor, Sun Peaks never disappoints! Access equipment rentals, lessons for all ages, and there is no need to worry about driving in the snow - you can hop on the Kamloops Sky Shuttle and enjoy the ride!

Kelowna: Ice Skate Downtown

If you want to get some action on ice, you do not need to go far! Visit Stuart Park Ice Rink in Downtown Kelowna. This activity is 100% free and is a great activity to get some exercise. Skate rentals are available on site, just make sure to bring your own protective gear for outdoor skating and you are good to go!

Langley: Outdoor Fun at Penzer Action Park

From climbing structures to swinging bars, Penzer Action Park is a fantastic place to learn some biking, skating and even parkour skills! A park that welcomes all skill levels, kids will have lots of fun trying out the in-ground trampoline and adults will find numerous trails to explore around the park! Just another way to keep yourself active in the winter - learn some new tricks and enjoy the endless space for outdoor entertainment.

Prince George: Explore Ancient Forest/Chun T’oh Whudujut Provincial Park

If you love to be surrounded by nature, this is the activity for you! The Ancient Forest is considered one of the region’s best attractions, where you can stroll along the 450-metre boardwalk that takes you past 1,000-year-old western red cedars, a breathtaking waterfall, and a temperate rainfall ecosystem. Without a doubt, picture worthy!

Surrey: Celebrate Family Day at Darts Hill Garden Park

On Saturday, February 19 from 11am to 3pm, take part in activities celebrating Family Day at Darts Hill Garden Park! Activities include story time, guided nature walks, live music, and various educational activities. Programs are drop-in and free with entry to the garden.
