A daily “National Geographic” right outside her door
Buckland Manor resident marvels at flora and fauna
AS A NEWLY arrived resident to Buckland Manor Apartments in Kelowna, Ariaal Ashlie is enjoying apartment living like she never imagined she would.
Not having lived in an apartment, Ashlie says she anticipated her situation may be a bit different from her homes in the past, but since moving to the Kelson Group-owned building in May 2017 she's continually and pleasantly surprised.
As it turns out, there is a whole world of wildlife and nature right outside Ashlie's door available to discover each day. Being an avid photographer much of her life, she says it's a dream being able to observe otters, owls, ducks, and blue herons that gravitate to Mill Creek, which meanders just behind the property at 445 Buckland Avenue.
In her own words: "I have lived in Victoria, Vancouver, London, Switzerland and the U.S., and this is, hands down the best place I have ever lived in my life! Why? Because of the daily National Geographic taking place before my very eyes!"
Ashlie found her love of photography early in childhood when her father gave her a Brownie box camera as a gift one Christmas. Through the years she has experimented with a variety of cameras and styles of photography, but when it comes to a favourite, Ashlie says capturing shots of flowers and plants through her macro lens is a clear preference.
So, to have beautiful Day Lillies and other gorgeous flowers growing just beyond her patio door and a creek that is full of fish and attracts animals and birds to the area is a true treat.
"I have taken so many pictures since living here," says Ashlie. "People look at my photos and think I live on a nature preserve, but I assure them all that I live in downtown Kelowna and only a block away from Harvey Avenue."
In a most recent observation, Ashlie watched a young racoon with its mother walking along the creek in search of some trout and carp that swim in the creek. There are also families of ducks that make their way along the creek, all captured through the camera lens. For Ashlie and her companion cat, Baby Sherlock, the daily sites continue to intrigue.
