Staying Healthy and Active During the Colder Months: Indoor Apartment Workout Ideas

Posted On Oct 10, 2023

Don't let the chilly weather dampen your fitness routine! Beat the winter blues and keep your wellness journey on track with these invigorating indoor workout suggestions, expertly curated for you. We've teamed up with renowned physiotherapist, Tammy Uyeda, to bring you a collection of tailored exercises that cater to apartment living.

No matter where you are, you can incorporate these small exercises into your day to help you stay fit and energized without leaving the comfort of your own home.

Here are some of Tammy’s favourite exercises:

  • Hip flips (10 reps)

This exercise can be used as part of your warm-up, cool-down, or simply as a motor control exercise to mobilize your hips so that you can access better strength and stability throughout your day.

  • Heel raises (20 reps)

These are perfect for strengthening the calf muscles, a group that is frequently ignored. Quick heel raises daily will help keep that spring in your step and your balance on point!

  • 1 Leg Sit/Stand (15 reps)

This is a great move to sneak into your everyday routine, strengthening the large muscles in each of your legs. All you need is a surface to sit on - the lower the surface, the more challenging this will be. Tip: Hinge at your hips to get your booty involved to save your knees!

  • Plank rotations (20 reps)

Loading your upper body gives you a strong platform for your shoulders to work off of, and BONUS, you get a bit of a core workout too!

  • Thoracic rotation (5 times on each side)

Stiff shoulders and lower back muscle pain are common symptoms of tightness and compensation. If this is the case for you, try this exercise and unlock your mid back so that you can share the work between all three areas and allow each to do their part.

  • Quad stretch (30 seconds)

Tight, stiff knees? Stretching your quad muscle group is a fantastic way to decrease compressive forces at your knees and free up your kneecap for optimal knee mechanics.

  • Calf stretch (30 seconds)

Calf stretches relieve tightness in the calf muscle, foot, ankle, and the back of the knee. It’s a 4-in-1 stretch, really!

  • Yoga/Stretching

Last but not least, incorporate a bit of yoga or stretching into your daily routine. These exercises are slow, calm, and relaxing and can be a great way to start or end your day. A solid and consistent practice can improve your strength, flexibility, and even your overall well-being to combat the winter blues! Stretching also feels great on muscles that are sore from previous workouts.

Incorporate these exercises into your daily routine and you’ll cover your basic functional fitness to keep you strong and energized all within your new, inspired-living condo! Wave goodbye to the winter chill as you embark on a fitness adventure that promises to keep you energized and glowing from the comfort of your living space.
