Declutter Your Home: The Ultimate Guide to Apartment Spring Cleaning

Posted On Mar 9, 2023

Spring is just around the corner, and it is the perfect opportunity to clean and declutter your apartment. The change in season can be a great motivator but where do you even start? Shawn Ferguson of Everything Organized shared seven tips on how to tackle your spring cleaning with ease.

  1. Make a Plan: Start by planning what you want to accomplish. Decide what areas of your apartment need the most attention and prioritize your cleaning and decluttering tasks accordingly. Everything Organized recommends starting with the room you use the most and working your way through the rest of your apartment.
  2. Start with a Deep Clean: Give your apartment a deep clean from top to bottom, including dusting, vacuuming, and wiping down surfaces. This will help remove any allergens and make your space feel refreshed.
  3. Tackle Closets and Drawers: Closets and drawers can quickly become cluttered and disorganized. Start by taking everything out and deciding what to keep, donate, recycle, or throw away. Use the "One In, One Out" rule— for every new item you bring into your home, get rid of one item that you no longer need.
  4. Let go of Unused Items: Go through each room and identify items you no longer use or need. This can be a fantastic opportunity to donate gently used clothes, books, and other items to charity. Be honest with yourself about what you really need and try to avoid keeping unused items "just in case.”
  5. Create a Home for Everything: Make sure that everything has a designated place, so that it is easy to put away and find when you need it. By using shelves, baskets, and containers to help keep everything organized and using labels, it will be easier to quickly find what you need.
  6. Get Creative with Storage: If you are short on space, get creative with storage solutions. Vertical space is often underutilized and by using stackable bins and hanging organizers, you create lots of space that doesn’t look cluttered. Using under-the-bed storage containers for items you don't need on a daily basis can also be a great solution.
  7. Keep it Simple: Remember that the goal of spring cleaning is to make your life easier, not harder. Keep it simple and focus on creating a space that is clean, organized, and clutter-free. Make it a multi-day project so you don’t get overwhelmed.

The most important step is to get started. Put on some music, grab some totes and cleaning items, and “spring” into action.
