Are you an attention-to-the-details person with a proven history of responsibility, working well both with a team and independently, and are you resourceful and responsible? If so, Kelson Group is looking for an Assistant Controller to work with our team in Kamloops.

As an Assistant Controller for Kelson Group, you will be responsible for overseeing the preparation of financial statements, maintaining the general ledger, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and assisting in the development of internal control policies and procedures. The Assistant Controller is also responsible for supervising accounting staff and providing guidance on technical accounting issues.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Controller to manage and coordinate the accounting and finance functions and department.

  • Assist in the formulation of accounting policies, procedures, and best practices to improve efficiency and accuracy of the accounting function.

  • Oversee daily accounting activities including accounts payable, accounts receivable, journal entries, reconciliations, and maintenance of the general ledger.

  • Maintain various schedules such as fixed assets and mortgages.

  • Supervise and coach accounting team members, promoting a cohesive and efficient work environment.

  • Assist with preparation for year-end audit and respond to auditor inquiries.

  • Assist in budgeting and variance analysis.

  • Reconcile financial discrepancies by collecting and analyzing account information.

  • Oversee the preparation of government filings and ensure compliance with all local, provincial, and federal tax filings and reporting requirements.

  • Assist with the preparation of financial statements, summaries and other financial management reports and ensure the accuracy of reports and financial results.

  • Research technical accounting issues for compliance and recommend and/or implement changes to systems and processes when required.

  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of financial systems and software.

  • Respond to inquiries from managers and Executives as required

Relationships:

The Assistant Controller is required to work collaboratively with all employees and managers, however the internal relationships that are the most critical to their success include those with the Controller, President, Property Managers, Building Managers, HR Manager, and all employees in the accounting department.

Externally, the Assistant Controller engages with Financial Institutions, Auditors, Mortgage Companies, Insurance Brokers, CRA and Occupational Health and Safety Authorities.

The Assistant Controller reports directly to the Controller.

Requirements:

  • University degree in accounting, finance, economics or business administration.

  • Completion of CPA or other relevant accounting designation.

  • Minimum five (5) years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory roles.

  • Highly effective planning, prioritization, and time management skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel.

  • Excellent computer skills including prior experience with accounting software. Experience with Yardi Systems would be an asset.

  • Prior experience in the property management industry would be an asset.
